Single Malt Scotch Art

“One fateful morning, photographer Ernie Button picked up the Scotch glass he had left out overnight and noticed something — a pattern in the film of dried liquid at the bottom of his cup. So began Vanishing Spirits: The Dried Remains of Single Malt Scotch, an ongoing project in which Button experiments with photographing Scotch residues, shining different lights through them, manipulating the dry patterns, or letting them run hog wild. The result looks like miniature magic planets or puddles of gold or oil — pretty gorgeous for something accidentally left on the counter.”

There’s Amazing Drumming, Incredible Drumming, and then the Top Secret Drum Corps

WHOA! “The Top Secret Drum Corps is a 25-person drum corps and colorguard group from Basel, Switzerland who display incredible precision and choreography despite being comprised of performers who have separate day jobs. Formed in 1990 the group rose quickly to fame after being the fist non-military, non-British acts to perform at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which they have now performed at four times.”

Mama Africa Google Doodle

Google celebrates wonderful Miriam Makeba! She was defining voice of African music and civil rights campaigner. I was lucky to see her perform in Stockholm Jazz festival 2006. Her strength and power lives on.

Check out also Mika Kaurismäki’s Mama Africa, the acclaimed documentary about her life.

Picturesque Chinese Landfills

“These images by artist Yao Lu might resemble traditional Chinese landscape paintings of cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains. Lu digitally assembles each of her images using photographs of landfills and other aspects of urbanization draped in green mesh to mimic idyllic scenery.”

Tulip field in the Netherlands

“Abstract rainbows of color fill the landscape in these beautiful photos by French photographer Normann Szkop who hopped in a Cesna with pilot Claython Pender to soar above the tulip fields in Anna Paulowna, a town in North Holland.” I miss the Netherlands!❤

Birds Made from Recycled Metal Scraps

“Inspired by the forms of animals artist Barbara Franc seeks to capture a sense of motion as she recreates a variety of wildlife from birds to horses using reclaimed materials such as old food tins. Via her artist statement:

I have always been fascinated by the shapes and sculptural forms of animals, they present a never-ending source of inspiration to me. I try to capture a feeling of their movement and presence in my sculpture. For this I use wire and other materials in a way that suggests drawing in three dimensions. This allows me greater freedom to add changes whenever I want during the construction to keep the feeling fluid and to reflect the diversity of movement and form. I increasingly use recycled and discarded materials as I enjoy the challenge of transforming something with a past history into something new and exciting.”

Medieval Cat Paw Prints

“Has your cat ever walked across your keyboard? Well, it’s not a new problem. Medieval book historian Erik Kwakkel recently Tweeted this photo of a 15th century book with… you guessed it… cat paw prints in ink on the pages! We’re part of a long and glorious historical movement, friends.”
