Mama Africa Google Doodle

Google celebrates wonderful Miriam Makeba! She was defining voice of African music and civil rights campaigner. I was lucky to see her perform in Stockholm Jazz festival 2006. Her strength and power lives on.

Check out also Mika Kaurismäki’s Mama Africa, the acclaimed documentary about her life.

Philip Barlow’s Oil Paintings

Looking at Philip Barlow‘s work takes a bit of getting used to, especially in this day of high-definition and hyper-realism. Blurry, hazy, but definitely a familiar sight, probably the best description is found on the artist’s Bio page: “Although he hints at forms and shapes in his work, not all the information is given, therefore allowing the viewer an avenue to create their own stories and meanings.”

As for Philip’s own stories, the South African native has traveled all over Europe, exhibited in Holland, Johannesburg, and San Francisco before settling down in his current location of Noordhoek, Cape Town with “two children and a dog”.
